Freshly Milled Kamut Muffin with Jammy Marionberries

Many years ago I was staying with my grandparents in Palm Springs. My grandma and I were in the kitchen cleaning up from breakfast and she turned to me and proudly showed me the bottom of her well-used pans exclaiming how clean and shiny they were. This memory comes to mind every so often because I didn’t understand then and quite honestly don’t understand now why that was a source of pride, until yesterday.

Early Tuesday morning I had a delivery scheduled for a new double door freezer. It’s a piece of equipment that we have needed for many years but one that I couldn’t commit to until recently. To prepare for its arrival, equipment needed to be moved and in that process I had the opportunity to dive deep on rare cleaning projects. All the fridges and freezers were pulled out and I was able to sweep, mop and bleach behind each of them. While wiping down the back of one of the fridges I thought competitively to myself “oh yeah, come and look behind my fridges, it’s so clean back here you won’t find anything”. I laughed at myself thinking who could care that behind my fridge was spotlessly clean and then remembered my grandma. I guess the cleanliness of the bottom of her pans gave her the same pride and satisfaction that I found scrubbing the bakery.

The bakery is beginning to feel fresh and full of possibilities. We are still elbow deep in organization and cleaning projects. We are also in hiring mode and that is taking a fair amount of attention from the bakery’s manager and myself.

In an attempt to stay focused and on track to finish what we have begun we will continue on this weekend with our menu that is posted on our website without a special item. However, in remembrance of the quiet time that I was afforded during lockdown we are bringing back a muffin that I developed during that time with my youngest by my side. The freshly milled Kamut muffin with jammy Marionberries.

I think Grandma Millie would be proud.

Thank you for your support today and always.
