Labor Day Weekend Treats
This weekend is Labor Day weekend, and even though most kids are already back to school as of today, it’s still the unofficial end of summer in my books. I know many of us have plans to celebrate, and whether you have a bbq, potluck, block party, or last trip of the season on your calendar, we have plenty of freshly baked treats to add a little extra something special to your festivities.
A Duo of Farmer’s Market Fruit Tarts in a Spelt Crust!
This week is also a Secret Item week. After a trip to the Farmers Market for some local and seasonal inspiration, I returned with a cornucopia of Farmers Market fruits: blueberries, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, plums and cherries. I tossed them in brown butter and honey, folded them into a spelt flour crust, and brushed them with a house-made vanilla red currant glaze. The result is a Duo of Farmer’s Market Fruit Tarts – a celebration of the season's bounty!

Summer Fruit Parfait
The persistence of my garden inspires the secret item this week. My two garden boxes are overflowing with mint and lemon verbena. I’ve been entranced by lemon verbena since tending my garden in Los Angeles, where the plant grew with abundance. The chartreuse leaves — long, thin, and slightly sticky with an intoxicating perfume — make the perfect match for infusions – ice cream, panna cotta, creme chantilly, jams and more.

Summer Fruit Pie + the Kouign returns
Hope you all had a relaxing long weekend spent unwinding with loved ones and enjoying the lovely weather. We had a great time making four different summer pies for the Fourth of July, and are happy to say that our Summer Fruit Pie with Ginger Oat Streusel and Summer Fruit Hand Pie remain on the menu for your continued enjoyment this weekend. The filling has peaches, rhubarb, and berries tossed in homemade strawberry jam – a taste of summer in every bite!

Our staffing shortages are finally ending, as we have hired new staff members for most of the positions that we were looking to fill. As challenging as these changes have been, it's always fun to get new energy in the shop.

It feels as if the first day of Spring was only yesterday, yet somehow we are already heading into the unofficial beginning of summer: Memorial Day Weekend. I am hoping for weather like we had this past weekend so I can spend plenty of time outdoors with friends and family. But even if the rain persists, I’m still planning on having a Memorial Day BBQ to kick off summer regardless!
