1503 Matzah
Happy Spring! This week we are excited to open online preorders for our 1503 Matzah. We are honored to continue this very special annual tradition, and hope you’ll join us in celebrating its history.
At this point, many of you are familiar with the story of our Matzah. But for those who aren’t, this centuries old recipe stems from the era of the Spanish Inquisition, when Catholic Spaniards were encouraged to report any religious activity outside of the Church. A woman in Northern Spain named Angelina de Leon secretly made Matzah, which had been outlawed with Judaism. Her maid saw her and testified against her in court, exposing her as a secret Jew in the year 1503. The court documents contained the ancient recipe. You can read more about our Matzah in last year’s article in Portland Monthly.
The recipe uses flour, high quality olive oil, eggs, a bit of wildflower honey, and black pepper. It’s crisp and light with a delicate golden blister. You have never tasted Matzah like this before. It’s truly unique – and truly delicious!
Due to spring break obligations, all Matzah orders will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 9th or Sunday, April 10th. But since Matzah production requires a longer lead time for planning, we are opening online preorders now! We know Passover begins on the 15th, but not to worry – our Matzah will remain shelf-stable through the holiday and beyond (note: this recipe is not Kosher for Passover). In order for us to best keep your orders organized, please select a Matzah Pickup Date at checkout and place your 1503 Matzah orders separately from pastry orders for this weekend!
Last year’s Matzah was one of our fastest selling items of all time, so be sure to reserve your half-pound box as soon as you can.
Finally, there are a few items that won’t be available next weekend as we begin to add some more seasonal items to the menu. That said, please enjoy our Brown Butter Coffee Cake Muffin with Raspberries and Brown Butter Apple Hand Pies while you can.
Best,
Kim
