2020 Ameztoi Rubentis Txakolina Rosado (Spain/ Pais Basco/ Txakolina/ Hondarribi Beltza and Hondarribi Zuri/ Rosé)
Not only the original, and the best, of Spain’s pink Txakolis, Rubentis is simply one of the world’s best rosés, and a tremendous QPR wine. The Ameztoi family has been making wines for seven generations, farming vines that are nearly two centuries old, including the increasingly rare indigenous red hondarrabi beltza grape, on the hillside above the ancient seaside village of Getaria. The red hondarrabi beltza and white hondarrabi zuri grapes are handpicked, and after direct pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeast occurs in stainless steel for 20 days, at the end of which the stainless steel tanks are closed to preserve the naturally occurring carbonation, which makes the wine semi-sparkling. The tanks are then kept chilled to near freezing before bottling, which preserves the wine’s delicate, effervescent character and signature mousse. The resulting wine is fresh, racy, and light, with notes of rose petals and strawberries, and a tremendous salty mineral zing. With an alcohol level of just 11%, this wine is a perfect sunny day summer wine.
